Job Summary: The SEN (Special Educational Needs) Teaching Assistant provides tailored support to students with special educational needs, ensuring they have full access to the curriculum and school life. Working under the guidance of the SEN Coordinator and classroom teachers, the SEN Teaching Assistant plays a crucial role in promoting learning, social development, and inclusion, helping students to reach their potential in a safe and supportive environment. Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with special educational needs, focusing on academic, social, and emotional development.
  • Adapt teaching materials and methods to meet the specific needs of each student, in line with their Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
  • Assist students with specific challenges, such as learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, physical disabilities, or sensory impairments, helping them to engage in class activities.
  • Foster students’ independence, encouraging them to develop self-confidence and self-advocacy skills.
  • Support teachers in delivering lessons, helping to differentiate tasks and make learning accessible for SEN students.
  • Monitor student progress, identifying any additional support requirements, and reporting observations to the SEN Coordinator or teacher.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Education: A Teaching Assistant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 CACHE, NVQ) or a specialisation in SEN support is preferred.
  • Experience: Experience working with children with SEN in an educational setting is preferred. Knowledge of specific needs (such as autism, dyslexia, or ADHD) is highly beneficial.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of SEN strategies, safeguarding policies, and health and safety procedures within an educational context.
